The other day, as I was preparing to go slave for “the man”, a sight had captured my attention. As I gazed out the kitchen window, nestled in between the chains of the swing was a large cobweb. Drops of morning dew had rested themselves upon each cord. What resulted was a beautiful display reminiscent of strands of pearls. However, such beauty can be deceiving. Especially for the prey that will become entangled within its clutches, only to stare into the eyes of the weaver before it meets its demise.

Satan is compared to many things within God’s Word. A spider isn’t one of them. He is however, given a deceitful comparison in 2 Corinthians 11:14, where it states “And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.” The Apostle Paul is addressing false teachings and prophets, who twist Christian doctrine under the veil of truth and righteousness, deceiving those who know no better. But Satan’s deception is not limited to false teachings. If so then his influence would be very limited. Being a Berean (Acts 17:11) would be the only weapon needed to tear down his web. It wasn’t a false teaching or prophet that inquired in The Garden “Did God really say…?” (Genesis 3:1).
Satan disguises as something beautiful. Something that feeds the lust of the flesh and of the eyes, and gives growth to the pride of life. A sweet morsel on the tongue is all that we will sneak. It won’t hurt a bit. But then a morsel is no longer enough as eventually we are basking in our gluttonous feast. What was once hidden on the tongue is now dripping from head to toe. Before we know it what was a small guilty pleasure has now made us numb to the truth. We search frantically through God’s Word, trying to find that one verse that justifies our actions. But it isn’t there. So we place one where there isn’t, all the while asking “What’s wrong with it?”
I once veered off the path. As the crowd paraded down the halls of praise, singing hymns that reverberated through the halls of heaven, I snuck into a side corridor and into my secret place. I began listening to Christian metal again. It’s Christian! What could possibly be wrong with it? Songs from Demon Hunter began to feed my flesh. I would hunt the online dials to binge on their offerings. Then I found this video. Was it when the lead singer lit his cigarette? Was it when he began popping pills? Was it when he drove himself and his frantic and bound passenger to their death? I am uncertain as to which one queued my epiphany. I stopped. I asked myself “What am I doing? Why am I watching this unholy trash that calls itself ‘Christian’?” That “light” was the veil for the wicked one.
How much longer? How much longer will the child of God drive down the road, singing to the latest sexed up pop song, also known as graphic audio porn (Colossians 3:1-2)? How much longer will they ask “What’s wrong with it?” How much longer will the child of God sit before the latest Walking Dead, feeding their lustful eyes with the flesh of another being shredded from the bone with a twinkle in their eye (Philippians 4:8)? How much longer will they ask “What’s wrong with it?” How much longer will the child of God praise Him in one breath, and spew forth curses in the next (Ephesians 4:29, James 3:9-12)? How much longer will they ask “What’s wrong with it?” How much longer will they slander a brother before the ears of another (Proverbs 16:28)? How much longer will they ask “What’s wrong with it?” How much longer will they ask “What’s wrong with it?” when Sunday mornings in the sanctuary are being contorted to replicate Saturday nights (Hebrews 12:28)? How much longer will they ask “What’s wrong with it?” when they turn their backs on their pastor because his biblical message did not tickle their ears (2 Timothy 4:3-4)? How much longer will they roll their eyes when he preaches for holiness and against worldliness (1 John 2:15-16)? How much longer must the child of God search His Word to justify their adultery (James 4:4)?
The deceiving light of the dark angel leads us to believe that inward self-destruction is innocent. That numbness is commonplace as it fulfills our lustful desires. It leads us to the banquet table of junk, instead of the garden where nutrition is plentiful. As we feast like sultans, we stumble upon the surprise that we have spiritual cancer. We wonder “How did this happen? I have been feasting well!” But believer, WHAT have you been feasting on? A body fueled on garbage will fail and break down with time. So will our spiritual bodies (1 Peter 2:2).
The deceiving light of the dark angel alters our perception of what is truth, and what is right. It leads us to justify our actions by proclaiming “What is WRONG with it?”, instead of “What is RIGHT with it?”
You may find that you have become ensnared in the beautiful ornate web. But what you thought was beautiful and innocent is in fact anything but as you stare into the hungry eyes of its weaver. He has you right where he wants you. Will you stay there and enquire of your predicament “What is wrong with it?”, or will you change your perspective? Will you ask “What is right with it?” as you chase the True Light?
“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;” (1 Peter 2:9).
